Women's
Detox Facts
Today, more than 4 million women in this country
use drugs. Women of all ages, races and cultures...
Women just like your best friend, your sister,
your co-worker, or your daughter... Women just
like you. Women who try to quit sometimes fail
at first. But help is available to overcome the
illness of drug abuse. Women who use drugs do
not have to face the problem alone.
• 9 million women in
the United States have used illegal drugs in
the past year.
• 3.7 million women have
taken prescription drugs non-medically during
the past year.
• More than 28,000 (70%)
of the AIDS cases among women are drug-related.
Almost half of all women age
15-44 have used drugs at least once in their life.
Of these women, nearly 2 million have used cocaine
and more than 6 million have used marijuana within
the past year. Most women drug abusers use more
than one drug.
Gender
Specific Detox Care
Separate Women's Detox
Units
Some alcohol and drug detox centers offer both
medically-supervised and non-medical detox services
for men and women. It's a well known fact in the
health-care industry that women have different
circumstantial needs, as well as different physical,
emotional and psychological needs as those of
men. Therefore, all alcohol and drug detox services
should be gender specific and housed in completely
separate units.
Detox Doctors
Upon arrival, each new woman needs to be examined
by an Addiction Medicine Physician and at that
time the doctor will order the proper woman's
detox protocol for each individual's situation.
When the new client enters the unit, normally
bed rest and good nourishment is what takes place
for at least the next 2-5 days, depending on the
clients physical condition. Also, if the doctor
has prescribed any medications, the staff carefully
monitors them and sees that the doctors orders
are followed to the letter.
Detox Safety, Privacy
and Comfort
Each unit is nicely furnished and offers a warm,
safe and comfortable environment, unlike that
of a sterile and impersonal hospital setting.
The units are staffed 24 hours per day with experienced
detox professionals who will monitor each residents
progress every half hour, until she regains some
of her strength and is clear of any complications.
The staff's priorities are to protect the client
until she's strong enough to maintain her own
safety, determine her immediate needs and report
them directly to the doctor, who provides the
client and the staff with whatever is required
to make the remainder of the women's detox period
as comfortable, safe and complication free as
possible.
Don't put the beginning
of a new life off another day!
If you're suffering from an alcohol or drug addiction
related problem, don't wait another day to do
something about it! The plain and simple truth
is, the longer you put off making the call, the
more severe your withdrawal symptoms are likely
to be. Also, alcohol and drug detox centers should
welcome calls from friends and family members
of those in need of detox. Many lives have been
spared when a friend or family member pick up
the phone and dialed a detox centers number when
the alcoholic or addict wouldn't or couldn't.
