Detox
Protocols
Most alcohol and drug detox situations require
between 3-10 days to allow the body to metabolize
the narcotics and for the physical, as well as
the cravings and other psychological withdrawal
symptoms to begin to subside.
Alcohol Withdrawal can
be very dangerous if it is attempted without medical
supervision. Alcohol detox has the potential for
triggering any number of withdrawal symptoms.
These symptoms can range from mild to severe.
Mild alcohol detox symptoms can include tremors
(the shakes), headaches, vomiting, perspiration,
restlessness, lose of appetite and insomnia. More
serious effects of alcohol detox can be Delirium
Tremors (DT’s), autonomic hyperactivity
and seizures (convulsions). It has been estimated
that 1 in 4 patients are at high risk of a withdrawal
seizure if not medically monitored. The time necessary
for alcohol
detox can be anywhere from 3 to 10
days.
Benzodiazepines such
as xanax (alprazolam) and valium are prescribed
to treat anxiety, acute stress reactions, and
panic attacks, while some benzodiazepines are
CNS depressants (tranquilizers and sedatives).
It can be very dangerous for
the seriously addicted to stop taking benzodiazepines
abruptly. Please consult an Addiction Medicine
Specialist before attempting to detox from benzodiazepines.
The Opiate Family
contains two widely abused drugs that stand out
among the drugs that usually require significantly
more time than 10 days to detox from. Oxycontin
is a synthetic opiate pain medication and the
severe to moderate withdrawal symptoms that the
drug produces can last up to several weeks if
not treated properly. In addition, a long term
(anything over a year) methadone maintenance dependency
can produce some very severe withdrawal symptoms
that have been known to linger for weeks and sometimes
even months when the use of the drug is stopped
"cold turkey" without medication to
mask the symptoms.
